My Cup Overflows

Have you ever filled a cup so full that the drink spilled right over the top?
That’s called overflowing.
In Psalm 23, David describes God as a loving Shepherd who takes care of His people. He provides what they need, leads them in the right direction, stays close when they are afraid, and never leaves them alone.
Then David says something beautiful:
“My cup runs over.” — Psalm 23:5
David wasn’t talking about an actual cup. He was describing a life so full of God’s goodness that it felt like a cup filled all the way to the top—and then spilling over.
God had been so faithful to David that David could look at his life and say, “You have given me more than enough.”
That didn't mean David's life was always easy. David experienced scary, sad, and difficult things. But even in those moments, God was with him.
And the same is true for us.
Our overflowing cup isn't measured by how many toys we have, how much money we have, or whether everything goes our way. Our greatest blessings come from knowing God.And when God fills our hearts with His goodness, we don't have to keep it all to ourselves.
We can let it overflow onto everyone around us.

Significance

A cup can only overflow when it has been filled first.
As parents, it's easy to focus on teaching our children to do good things—be kind, share, forgive, help others. But Psalm 23 reminds us where those things begin.
They begin with being filled by God.
“My Cup Overflows” is a reminder for our children to recognize God's goodness in their lives and then allow what He has poured into them to pour out onto others.
May we raise children whose cups are so full of Jesus that His love can't help but spill over everywhere they go.

Application

Grab a cup and several small items that can fit inside—pom-poms, marshmallows, blocks, cotton balls, or even pieces of paper.
Have your child name something God has given them as they place each item into the cup:
“God gives me love.” — Add one.
“God gives me family.” — Add one.
“God gives me forgiveness.” — Add one.
“God gives me joy.” — Add one.
Keep naming blessings and adding them until the cup begins to overflow.

GUIDED PRAYER

Dear God,
Thank You for being our Shepherd and taking such good care of us. Thank You for filling our lives with Your love, joy, peace, grace, and so many blessings.
Help us notice Your goodness, even on hard days. Fill our hearts so full of You that Your love overflows into the way we treat everyone around us.
Show us someone who needs a little of Your love today, and help us share what You have given us.
