Fruit of the Spirit

Before Jesus left the Earth and went to heaven, He breathed on His disciples, or students, and told them to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit of God began to live inside those who followed Jesus. Now filled with the Spirit, people began to see their attitudes and desires change. Instead of wanting to be mean to others, they wanted to be kinder. Instead of being short tempered and angry, they began to want to be patient and self-controlled. Instead of hatred, they found in their hearts the desire to love one another. In short, believers in Jesus found they became like beautiful trees that produce really good fruit, pleasing to God. We call this the "fruit of the Spirit."

Significance

Without the Holy Spirit, people want to follow their basic desires which we call the "flesh." These desires are not good and they produce bad things in the world such as jealousy, war, greed, hatred, and more. But the followers of Jesus have a special weapon against the flesh called the Spirit. The Spirit changes their desires to produce good things in the world.

Application

What areas of your life do you want God to change in you? Are there things you do that you aren't proud of, and you need help to do something different and better? We can't change on our own, but with the help of the Holy Spirit we can become more like Jesus. So decide what you need God to fix, and begin to ask Him to do it.

Galatians 5:22-23

Lord, I love you so much that I don't want to do the things that make you sad. I want to change. Please show me the things in my heart that you want to transform by your Spirit. Please come into my heart and give me your desires.
